Ubumi helps children, the seriously ill and we support education and reintegration in Zambian prisons.
Prisoners in Africa live under harsh conditions, and the conditions of incarceration in the shape of overcrowding, lack of access to health and lack of sufficient food, put them at risk of depression, disease and death. Many inmates suffer the loss of family and friends, leaving them abandoned.
Prison life is however very different from what most expect. There are many different kinds of people in prison, amongst them small children aged 0-4 years of age, who are with their incarcerated mothers in prison. Prisons also hold many seriously ill and/or elderly people, who require care and concern.
Not only do all human beings have a right to a dignified life, but imprisonment should never be life threatening. Ubumi focuses on the particularly vulnerable in prison; circumstantial children, mothers and pregnant women, seriously ill patients, education and reintegration - hand in hand with Zambia Correctional Service and the inmates themselves.
